I am reblogging this for the sake of stating that, while I have never read Les Miserables, nor am I likely to do so, having not the time nor the energy for something that long (see under: grad school forever): oh my GOD that is the best line, I want to steal that line, it is not fair that someone else wrote that line first even if it was Victor Hugo.

Les Misérables is an awesome read - when it’s telling a story. Unfortunately, Hugo will spend multi-chapter stretches just lecturing at you about the character. And yes, it totally produces gems like the above, but you really lose the moment of the story.

I have a Kindle. I believe it’s the third-gen - so it has an e-ink display, no touch-screen, and no colour. It wouldn’t be useful for reading comics. The Kindle, she is for novels. This is my first Kindle.

I also have an Android phone, and on that I make good use of its Comixology app!

Whenever someone mentions anything to do with sexual equality and sports in the same breath, I have to ask them if they’ve heard of the You Can Play project. :)

It’s a neat little initiative, started in the NHL, but slowly spreading into other sports leagues as well. Its message is simple: if you can play, then (no matter your sexual identity, sexual orientation, whatever) you can play.

I would say that is valid criticism with context. There’s really no context here. “Does this add anything to the story?” seems like it should be a question any writer should be asking themselves? It could be overwriting….

I’ve read Moby Dick a couple times, and I disagree strenuously with the last paragraph of your thoughtful post. I understand that people find the endless whaling detail excrutiating, but to say it ‘adds nothing to the story’ is simply ridiculous. Melville clearly disagreed. If you say, it adds nothing to the MAIN story, I would still argue tooth and nail that that is shooting way wide of the mark.

I think it shows a lack of understanding of tone, context, theme, character, and most importantly for this discussion, subtext. There are a million good reasons to include material that does not directly seem to affect getting protagonist A into conflict B. Instead of saying, ”that does nothing for the main story,” why not ask why that material is included, what the meaning of it is in story terms?

All that’s being shown is a lack of imagination, really.

Melville disagreeing with the poster is not the same as the poster being wrong.

“It adds nothing to the story” is a much more specific statement than “does not directly seem to affect getting protagonist A into conflict B.”

I say this without knowing any of the context that surrounded the original “It adds nothing to the story” comment - as the other commenters say, we we’re not given that context by your original post.

Sec 5.2(1)(c) of the ID screening regs of Aeronautics Act: “An air carrier shall not transport a passenger if the passenger does not appear to be of the gender indicated on the identification he or she presents.”

This can’t be legal, can it?

I would be willing to bet that:

1) Someone just wasn’t thinking when they wrote this clause,

2) They’re using “gender” to mean “sex”, and

3) It’ll get changed the first time someone challenges it loudly.

See, here’s what I didn’t understand, apparently.

Feminism isn’t about making all females flawless and perfect, and all men as pigs and oppressors, it’s about blah blah blah some OTHER thing that fits his messed up…

Do we really need this word “mansplaining”? Near as I can tell, its intended meaning is “a man lecturing a woman on a topic a woman would inherently have a better understanding of.” However, in practice, its use seems to translate as “The words of anyone who disagrees with me are inherently invalid.”

Ms. Simone’s use above doesn’t bother me, but I’ve read posts by others that literally used the phrase, “I don’t need anyone mansplaining to me why I’m wrong.” - i.e. the poster’s opinion is unassailable, because anyone who disagrees is just mansplaining, and mansplaining can be dismissed out of hand. All disagreement is pre-emptively labeled “mansplaining”.

I’ve also seen disagreement that had nothing to do with gender dismissed as mansplaining. (I got hit with it during a discussion as to the quality of the new Clash of the Titans with respect to the source myths.)
